Introduction

Homosexuality can be defined as the romantic and/or sexual attraction or behavior between members of the same sex or gender and is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, along with bisexuality and heterosexuality.  We are born with our sex organ, either male or female, with few exception of having both, called hermaphrodite.  In my youth, I rarely heard of homosexual and would detest at the term when someone speak out in their small talks when we get older.  We were brought up and cherished to have our sexual orientation according to our gender. It is a very controversial topic. One could claim it is one of the three sexual orientations which everyone of us has our own right to select for our liking. For or against  is only a very subjective alternative and could be altered  as time goes by.  The common term for men homosexual is gay, for women lesbian; whilst for heterosexual, straight.

Homsexual? Why

Why persons want to be homosexuals? Are they born to be one?  Or are there other factors that make them to become homosexual?  Persons becoming homosexuals can be due to environmental factors as some studies indicated parental relationship, rejection or absence of father, a closer bond with mother or working in a more secure position of being one may put influence on the person's attitude to their sexual orientation.

Old Homosexual Warning Video shows how the boy was lured by the older man when he hitched a hike home after school.  He's most unfortunate but he did not choose to become one.

Homosexuality in religion

I believe that homosexuality has no place in religion and it is being hotly a controversial issue in today's church.  They consider the legitimacy of same-sex love as "(1) It is contrary to nature. (2) It is condemned in Scripture. (3) Its acceptance would ruin society." (CAUTHEN, K. Homosexuality and Religion. Retrieved October 9, 2011 from http://www.bigissueground.com/atheistground/cauthen-homosexuality.shtml) The Bible consistently teaches that God only sexually joined opposite genders together, sanctifying them in marriage, having created men and women uniquely compatible and complementary. (Gn. 2:18-24; Mt. 19:4; 1Cor. 11:8-12)  Studies shows that religious upbringing and culture can strongly affect rates of homosexuality.

Homosexuality in Society

Homosexuality, we must admit, has always been existing in our society, in ancient time and modern nowadays.  They were tolerated or ignored by the Christian church throughout Europe.  We can trace back to the 12th century that people showed their hostility to be viewed as “unnatural”.  In19th century, medicine and psychiatry were introduced to plea with religion and law over sexuality.  But it still is seen as a crime and a sin by conservative societies in some countries. Today whether homosexuality is right and wrong depends on the basic culture of the societies which also are undergoing debate and review. (Ratrriax, (December 29, 2006) An In Depth Look at Homosexuality in Society)  For instance, Louisa Wall, who was a former Black Fern, admitted in her article she wrote for "Gay Expression" that she is a lesbian and also revealed that there are also other players being accepted in their community. (Gay Expression, 21 Sept - 04 Oct 2011, Issue #509, The foundation of my lesbian identity has been based around my sport, page 12-13)

Legality worldwide

Not all countries in the worlds accept homosexuality.  Some countries impose a wide variety of laws against homosexuality from full same-sex marriage to the death penalty as punishment for homosexual intercourse.  Some countries without formal laws against it may indulge an openly hostile culture to persecute individuals by other means.

However, in most western countries, consensual sexual intercourse between related adults of the same sex is not prohibited and furthermore they are recognized with identical rights, protection and privileges even including marriage.  Homosexual decriminalized acts were declared in Poland in 1932, Denmark in 1933, Sweden in 1944, the United Kingdom in 1967 and India in 2009.  On the other hand, today several countries in Asia, the Caribbean and the South Pacific, and many countries in the Middle East and Africa outlaw homosexuality.  In New Zealand, homosexual sex was legalized as the Homosexual Law Reform Act 1986 was passed with the restriction on the consent age set at 16.

Conclusion

Why some people are homosexual? Some people believe that genetics, social or individual factors, alone or in combination, may constitute their sexual orientation . There is no scientifically sound research indicating their support the cause is due to troubled family relationships.  But we have to realized that homosexuality is not a disease.  People cannot be forced or pressurized to change their sexuality.   Irrational fear, prejudice or discrimination towards homosexuals may lead to homophobia which is based entirely on one's fear and ignorance.  Name calling, teasing and even assault and murder are the behaviours we hate to see.  We are living in New Zealand, a free society advocating human rights.  If you are a homosexual, you should not be ashamed or afraid of coming out of the closet to share your feeling with your parents or your friends that you trust.  But it is your decision and judgment whether it is alright but not boastful under the circumstances to reveal your sexual orientation.

To end this blog, Catch the Gay in YouTube would bring a much hilarious side to give the gay people a poke in the ribs.
